Southern Barbecue Baked Beans Recipe
8 to 10 slices cut bacon low sodium preferred (cook and crumble)
1/2 medium green bell pepper diced
1/2 medium red bell pepper diced
1 pound lean ground beef
1 sausage link sliced or diced
1 medium sweet onion finely diced
salt to taste
ground black pepper to taste
1 tsp garlic powder
2 - 28 oz cans baked beans
3/4 cup barbecue sauce favorite brand preferred half 1/2 cup dark brown sugar or 3/4 cup light brown sugar
3 tablespoons mustard ex. wholegrain, yellow, Dijon
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
2 tbsp dry barbecue seasoning “Cooking With Tammy” brand preferred
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Using a large skillet, cook the bacon and sausages thoroughly. Drain off any excess oil if necessary.
Brown the ground meat removing any excess oil if necessary. Add the onions and bell peppers. Cook for about three minutes, or until the onions are translucent and the bell peppers become slightly softened.
Season with seasoned salt or salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
Using a separate bowl, add beans, brown sugar, barbecue sauce, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, barbecue seasoning, and combine.
Using a large-size casserole dish, add the bean mixture.
Bake for 60-90 minutes uncovered.
Combine the beans and allow the beans to sit out for about 5 to 10 minutes before serving.
