The war between Iran and Iraq included the so-called 'Tanker War' in which both sides attempted to disrupt each other's oil exports. Iraq initiated such attacks and until 1984 it was the only side attacking oil tankers in the Persian Gulf. Iran attempted to use shuttle tankers to transport its oil to locations in the southern part of the Gulf and thus keep their customers' tankers out of range of Iraqi aircraft. But in November 1986, Iraqi Air Force launched a bold raid against Larak Island oil terminal. Larak Island is located in the Strait of Hormuz and it was initially out of range of Iraqi aircraft. But Iraqis acquired in-flight refueling pods for their Mirage F.1s and 81st Squadron commander led a two-ship flight supported by three tankers on this very long strike. Was it successful? Find out in the video.
