Recently Amazon annaunced that they made it possible to use IMAP clients with WorkMail. All you have to do is to use the IMAP endpoints. Some of the endpoints are:

imap.mail.us-east-1.awsapps.com
imap.mail.us-west-2.awsapps.com
imap.mail.eu-west-1.awsapps.com

However, you also have to configure a SMTP server for outgoing mail, for this you can use Amazon SES. The problem with SES is that new users are sandboxed, preventing them from sending e-mail to addresses and domain names that has not been verrifed. You have to contact Amazon to get them to change your limits, and move you out of the sandbox.

After having created your SMTP credentials, you can use the following endpoints:

email-smtp.us-east-1.amazonaws.com
email-smtp.us-west-2.amazonaws.com
email-smtp.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com

This tutorial shows how to configure Thunderbird, but it also applies to other clients, as the settings are very similar.
