Prelude #1: I was recently part of a bipolar sketching workshop, my first bipolar peer group experience. This poem was the result of reflections after a group chat on our last outing together. We were united in seeing the benefit of artistic expression for mental wellbeing.
In making this, I felt great catharsis when exploring emotion through words and rhythm, and how healing creating your own spoken word can be. Too often we beat ourselves up with thoughts of failure. ‘Wounds requiring care and repair,’ this is my favourite line for recovery. Every time a negative thought comes up that wants to drag me down, instead of going with it or attempting to ignore it, I now think of it as a wound - a cut made by the path of life, that requires me to apply compassion and warmth to myself in order to mend.
Coping with bipolar disorder is a big challenge, every day. Self-care is important, as are the words we say to ourselves. Bipolar disorder is still heavily stigmatised but I hope, by being open and sharing my personal story, to do a tiny part in alleviating that. Do you have a bipolar journey to share? Leave me a comment! I’m looking to find and create community, so that we can help each other with our words and actions, and figure out the best way forward.
