Prelude #3: There are some people, in education and in policy, parents and friends, and people considering diagnosis themselves, who think that diagnosis simply isn’t necessary. And that we ought to be building an inclusive world anyway…
Well! It’s true that we need to be building an inclusive world ‘anyway’, but guess what? In order to do that, we need to understand the issues facing neurodiverse people. And for this, we need to hear from those people and for them to know themselves, and to know themselves in the context of the problems they face. So I say: knowledge is power. Power over oneself, and power within society. Diagnosis gives us a framework in which we can place ourselves, and it gives us access to disability rights (theoretically) enshrined in law.
The downsides to diagnosis are: stigma; and this is mainly based on naivety, ignorance, fear, and misinformation. But stigma also stems from social issues regarding the way disability and difference has been treated in the past and due to the medical and deficit models; which are still perpetuated in many research paradigms. But it’s time for a new era - with foundations formed by the social model of disability and flipping the narrative - and I’m here for it. Who’s with me?
*Regarding point one in the video: UK Law, Equality Act 2010: Diagnosis isn't linearly a requirement, but there is a legal definition of 'disability' in this Act, and having a diagnosis is a straightforward way of demonstrating how one meets the listed criteria.
