This video will provide you with guidance on how to store your battery during the off season/winter months. We'll also provide tips for maintaining and extending the life of your battery. Finally, we'll show you how to prepare your battery for reinstall in spring. Below is a checklist to get you started!
Seasonal Battery Maintenance Checklist:
1. Disconnect the battery:
-(ALWAYS negative cable first, then positive)
2. Remove the battery
3. Check the voltage with a calibrated device:
-12.8 – 13 volts is full charge on most lead acid batteries.
-Some charging units will provide a resting voltage (with no load applied). These units may come calibrated from the manufacturer but can become inaccurate over time. The best thing to use is a calibrated multimeter. Inexpensive units are available at auto parts stores and online retailers.
4. Charge the battery (if necessary):
-Low and slow is always best.
-We recommend the Optima D400 or D1200. It is the only charger that is specifically designed to charge Optima batteries AS WELL as standard flooded, marine and powersports batteries. https://www.optimabatteries.com/produ...
5. Recheck the voltage:
-After charging is complete, allow the battery to rest 24 hours and then recheck the voltage (to allow the surface charge to dissipate).
-12.8 - 13volts is 100% charge for most batteries. If the battery is not fully charged, proceed to charge further. THE BEST WAY TO EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR BATTERY IS TO STORE IT AT 100% CHARGE.
6. Clean the battery:
-Remove any dirt or liquid from the top of the battery and terminals.
7. Store the battery:
-Store in a cool and dry place.
-A fully charged battery should be able to maintain a high enough state of charge to not require charging until it comes out of storage in spring. A fully charged battery can withstand temperatures well below -20F without freezing, however a discharged battery can freeze closer to 32F, the more discharged it is.
-If storing for an extended period of time (greater than 6 months), a maintainer is suggested. We recommend the Optima D1200 charger and maintainer. It is suitable for all Optima batteries as well as 12V standard flooded & AGM -auto/ marine, and motorcycle batteries.

8. Check the Voltage:
-Upon removing from storage, check the voltage of the battery.
9. Charge the battery:
-If the voltage is less than 12.8volts, charge the battery.
10. Clean the connection points:
-Clean the terminals and cable connections prior to reinstalling the battery.
-A terminal cleaning kit can make this job easier -- https://www.amazon.com/NOCO-Terminal-...
11. Install the battery:
-(ALWAYS positive cable first, then negative)
12. Save this video for the next time you need to store your battery.
Always wear safety glasses and gloves when working with or near batteries.
