WBC interim welterweight champion Mario “El Azteca” Barrios (29-2, 19 KOs) earned a hard-fought unanimous decision victory against Argentina’s Fabián “TNT” Maidana (22-3, 16 KOs), the younger brother of former world champion Marcos Maidana, in the co-feature of the Canelo-Munguia event on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Maidana started strong, applying pressure early, while Barrios boxed patiently, looking for openings. In the third round, an overhand right from Barrios landed cleanly, sending Maidana to the canvas.

Barrios continued to box behind his jab and stalk Maidana, landing significant punches midway through the sixth round. “El Azteca” appeared to be on his way to victory as he maintained the pressure past the halfway point of the seventh. Despite his effective boxing, Barrios’s right eye was swollen shut going into the eighth round.

In the ninth, Barrios continued to box effectively, though Maidana managed to land some solid shots. However, Barrios’s ring generalship was evident throughout the fight. Maidana had his moments but was largely outboxed as Barrios’s experience shone through, finishing strong and securing the decision win.

All three judges scored the fight 116-111 in favor of Barrios.
