After a slow start, Gervonta "Tank" Davis, an unbeaten lightweight with a record of 28 wins and 26 knockouts, relied on his trademark power to defeat Hector Luis Garcia, the 130-pound titleholder. The bout took place on Saturday at Capital One Arena, serving as the final step before a proposed April fight against fellow undefeated boxer Ryan Garcia.
"I'm ready for the fight," Davis said. "It's scheduled for April, and I'm prepared. I'll take a short break for a week, then I'll definitely be back in the gym."
Despite facing challenges during training, including a brief stint in jail due to a misdemeanor domestic assault charge just before the fight, the Baltimore native kept his focus and determination.
Garcia, representing the Dominican Republic and a 2016 Olympic boxer, used his technique and reach to keep Davis cautious in the early rounds. However, the fight's intensity increased in Round 4 as both southpaws traded powerful shots at close range.
The action continued until Round 8, when a disturbance in the crowd briefly halted the fight. Once resumed, Davis delivered a series of heavy left punches, visibly staggering Garcia by the end of the round. Garcia, unable to continue due to impaired vision, did not come out for Round 9, resulting in a TKO victory for Davis, who retained his secondary WBA lightweight title.
"I knew he was hurt badly when I landed those shots," Davis commented. "He tried to hide it, but I could tell."
The fight was stopped 13 seconds into Round 9, with Davis leading on all judges' scorecards.
Although Garcia fought valiantly and engaged with the stronger opponent, Davis controlled the bout, landing 99 punches to Garcia's 55, with an impressive 53% accuracy rate for power punches.
Reflecting on his performance, Davis noted, "I'm always eager to improve and grow as a fighter. Southpaw opponents are a challenge, but that's part of the game."
Garcia had a successful 2022, defeating Chris Colbert and winning the WBA 130-pound title from Roger Gutierrez, earning him recognition as a contender for fighter of the year.
Looking forward, Davis stressed the importance of self-discipline and focus, acknowledging that his greatest challenge is maintaining these qualities. "Staying focused and working closely with my team and advisors is key to my long-term success in this sport," he concluded
