I am using a Brother 2340CV; but this likely works for other models as well. Demonstration of ending a straight line, and also in the round.

If you want to stitch a straight line/not in the round, I recommend using a piece of scrap fabric like this to start your seam on, then butt your fabric up next to it so that the chain has already started when you cross the edge of your fabric. Otherwise, it can take a few stitches to get going and the start of your seam may look messy. If you are stitching in the round, this isn't important because you will just stitch past wherever the seam did catch/start (which is why I greatly prefer stitching in the round when possible; but it isn't always an option for decorative topstitching).
