Olympic Peninsula April 2024 - Sequim, Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge, Marymere Falls, Lake Crescent, and Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park
When we get a sunny weekend in Washington, we go exploring. This weekend, we traveled to the Olympic Peninsula. Please subscribe to our channel if you enjoy exploring our parks and public lands.
We had heard that sequim (pronounced "Skwim") was the Sunniest place in Western Washington because it is in the "rainshadow" of the Olympic Mountain Range. After our first few months of living in Washington, we were ready for some sun, so we went to see if Sequim was really the place to be!
We enjoyed our road trip south of Tacoma and over the Hood River Bridge, then along the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway.
Once we got to the northern part of the Olympic Peninsula, we decided to explore the Dungeness Area. There is a county park that has a historic Railroad bridge from 1915 that is now a walking and biking trail. We looked around the Dungeness Nature Center and then walked the trail to enjoy the sunshine for a bit.
We had seen information about the Dungeness Spit and Lighthouse at the Strait of Juan de Fuca. That spit and lighthouse is now managed by the National Park Service as part of the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge. We didn't hike out to the lighthouse, but we did see it and Mount Baker on our hike down to the beach.
Our main activity for the weekend was to get down to Lake Crescent and Marymere Falls in Olympic National Park. We did that early in the morning on Day two of our trip. Olympic National Park is gigantic and getting anywhere requires effort and in this case, driving. Lake Crescent is truly stunning and calming. The hike to Marymere Falls is not a hard one and it made our morning complete.
We headed back east to Port Angeles where the Visitors' Center for Olympic National Park is. There we got our stamp for our National Park Passport and found out the Hurricane Ridge Road was open. That 17 mile drive is the only way to see the entire Olympic Range without a monumental hike. So, we ended our day with that drive wo beautiful vistas.
