How to get a job at Microsoft? (or really any big tech company). Computer science students all over the world often search for the secrets on getting accepted into prestigious and large tech companies like Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix etc. I was definitely among these computer science students, hoping one day I could experience what its like to work at a tech company with such a massive impact.
I feel like there is a misconception among computer science students and aspiring software engineers that in order to get a job at a big tech company like Google or Microsoft, you have to either have had a 5 amazing internships throughout undergrad, or graduate from a top CS university. While, having a past internship at Microsoft and graduating from Harvard CS or Stanford CS definitely will not hurt your chances, I'm here to talk about how I got a job at Microsoft as a program manager (originally supposed to be a software engineer).
There are many different pipelines for getting an internship or full time job at Microsoft, so it can vary widely per person. I think one of the most overlooked skills to develop as a computer science student is the ability to articulate your thought process and problem solving approach. Now for my technical interview at Microsoft, I definitely did not answer perfectly, but I do think I illustrated how I approach and solve problems. Additionally, I personally think that many big tech companies like Google and Microsoft, are moving away from the leetcode memorization problems, to more complex and 'harder' problem solving questions.
I was originally supposed to becoming into Microsoft as a software engineer, but I was presented with the opportunity to take on a more program manager role. So I still do software development work, but I also have the opportunity to take part in more macro-level decsions.
I hope if you are a computer science student, aspiring software engineer, or program manager, that this video could help explain the different pipelines one could take to get into a great tech company like Microsoft!
