In larger networks, devices are often organized into separate VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks) to improve security, network efficiency, and manageability. When a DHCP server resides in one VLAN, and there are DHCP clients in multiple other VLANs, the DHCP broadcast messages from clients cannot traverse VLAN boundaries. IP DHCP Helper assists in forwarding these DHCP broadcast messages from one VLAN to another, allowing clients from different VLANs to reach the DHCP server.
DHCP allows for centralized IP address management, which makes it easier to assign and manage IP addresses within a network. Rather than manually configuring IP addresses on individual devices, DHCP servers automatically assign IP addresses to DHCP clients dynamically. IP DHCP Helper ensures that these clients can reach the DHCP server irrespective of their physical location on the network.
