• Convincing.
• Soothing.
(Demonstrates my glass half full view on something new / different (work, location, etc.)...“The grass is always greener” idea.)
• What can go wrong?
• I can fill that glass

• It’s worth a try
(Verbal representations of my own inner voices, convincing me this new idea is in fact a ‘good’ idea and that any downsides are minimal.)
• A concoction of yes men deliver the optimist his medicine.
(The messages I give myself are the ‘yes men’ within my own mind, giving to me, ‘The Optimist’, what I crave. I ‘need’ those positive messages, those hopes of a better future, the ideas of something ‘more’ in order to keep going…that is my medicine.)
• Packaged as a cure for Illness
• Used as a treatment for addiction.
(The problem is defined. I convince myself over and over again that this ‘medicine’ is a cure. A simplified example: “If I just move to California, my problems will be solved - I will be happy.”
However, the reality may be that this ‘medicine’ is in fact just a temporary bandaid….a treatment for my addiction to change.)
• You’re not well
• Something’s wrong
• Why are you doing this?
• You made a mistake
(After some time (or after a change is made), negative voices begin to intrude and overwhelm.)
• Belief clocks out, hope picks up the slack.
(The fundamental belief that this change was in fact ‘the cure’ is diminished….leaving only ‘hope’ or ‘faith’ to keep me moving.)
• The optimist is out of office, please leave a message.
(At this point, I am no longer ‘The Optimist’ I was when I was convincing myself that this change would yield positive results…No longer available to directly hear the ‘yes men’….
….A message is left for The Optimist…an idea that sparks The Optimist to return and once again listen to the ‘yes men’ and their ideas….
….The cycle repeats.
