ENGLISH
When Lawrence came to martyrdom,
to bloody violence in the fray,
then Faith put on her arms and fought,
unsparing of her flowing blood.

He was the first of seven men
who at the alter stood to serve,
a deacon of the highest rank,
outstanding far beyond the rest.

He bravely fought with all his strength,
no sword was girded at his side,
yet he turned back the hostile blade
and struck against the wielding foe.

And so, Saint Lawrence, we desire
to celebrate your martyrdom;
for favors we request in prayer
are by your gracious gift obtained.

Since, chosen as a citizen
of that fair city most sublime,
you wear on high the civic crown
in heaven’s everlasting courts.

All honor to the Three in One,
to Father, Son, and Paraclete,
who grant us everlasting crowns
through your support and patronage. Amen.
