Lettering comics with Adobe Illustrator :: Drawing organic balloons that are easy to edit.
This is how I draw balloons for my comics, using Adobe Illustrator:
Pencil tool
Draw two separate shapes for the balloon and the tail.
Create a group with them.
Use the appearance tab to create a white fill and a black outline.
Move the outline UNDER the fill (inside the Appearance tab).
Now you have a nice organic shape you can edit very easily but it still has that nifty outline around it. No one will notice it's two separate shapes!
This has become my favourite way of doing balloons for comics.
