As a kid, I would let this theme loop forever, all the while staring at the Carnival Night Zone file that I could never beat. (Curse you, barrel. Curse you to the bowels of hell.)
Thematically, the tropical vibe of this song makes me smile every time I hear it.
I downsampled and bit-crushed some steel drums for the lead. I wanted it to have that nostalgic 16-bit distortion that was so common in FM synthesis. Also, I couldn't make those signature Sega Genesis sounds without Super Audio Cart. Highly recommend you check it out if you're interested in making chiptune music.

The composition of this song is truly amazing. From a nerdy theory perspective, the way the melody "cheats" the scale and goes natural when it should go flat, goes flat when it should go natural, is both mind-numbingly complex and soulfully simple.
