⬇️ MY FEAR FOODS ⬇️
At one point, my fear food list would have included any sweets (from candies 🍭 to chocolates 🍫 to apples 🍏). Over time, diet culture convinced me that processed foods were the devil. Later on, I faced these fears but found that others (my parents, bless them) wouldn’t praise me as much for the mushrooms 🍄 (a fear) as they would the pizza 🍕 (an equally big fear). And so I started to avoid healthier foods (particularly those that were denser) and developed greater anxiety around them.
You see, avoidance provides no counter-evidence for fears, leading to more avoidance and more fear and more avoidance and more fear
👉 The way to break this cycle is by going into the fear, providing evidence that nothing bad does happen.
Ice cream used to scare me. I decided to eat it once, my anxiety spiked, but then I learned that everything was actually quite okay 🤯 So I did it again, the anxiety spiked (though maybe slightly less than before) and again I found that things were fine. So I did it again and again and again (with ice cream, as well as with my other fear foods) and gradually my database of evidence filled up, my anxiety reduced, and my fears were overcome.
Of course, this makes it sound easier than it actually is 😬 Fear can be a very powerful deterrent.
But things that may help you to push through in spite of the fear are ...
1️⃣ To go in with a plan: I encourage many of my clients to write down their fear foods and scheduled them in (or use a fear food jar), ensuring there is less wiggle room to justify their way out
2️⃣ To rely on your support network: if you need someone to help you get your groceries, or to sit with you or eat with you as or after you face a challenge, be open about that. Do what you need to in order to make those challenges happen (and your support network will no doubt be more than happy to help!)
If this sounds overwhelming, know that it gets easier. And know that you do not have to do it alone 🌹
