Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Peter sends in a question that relates back to Episode 444. In that podcast, I showed how to change the gap width in Excel 2003 to have two columns stacked on top of each other. Peter wonders how to do this in Excel 2007. This is a great opportunity to show off a change in Excel 2007s charting engine. While Excel 2003 required you to open and close the Format dialog box repeatedly, you can now format everything on the chart from the new modeless Format dialog box in Excel 2007. Episode 538 shows you how!

Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! I'm Bill Jelen and I just got back from a relaxing week at the beach. Now, I'm catching up on all the emails that came in while I was away. If you have a question for the podcast, don't hesitate to send us an email or leave a voicemail and we'll do our best to answer it.

Today's question goes all the way back to podcast 444. A viewer asked how to create a chart in Excel 2007 that looks like the one I demonstrated in Excel 2003. In the 2003 version, we could easily format individual series by right-clicking and accessing the Format Data Series dialog box. But in Excel 2007, the charting engine has been completely rewritten. So, let's take a look at how to achieve the same result in the newer version.

To create a chart in Excel 2007, simply press Alt+F1. Now, to format a specific series, click on it and either right-click and choose Format, or press Ctrl+1 as before. You can also access the Format Selection button on the Layout or Format tab. The dialog boxes may look different, but all the options are still there. In this example, we want to move the series to the secondary axis and increase the gap width. And the great thing about Excel 2007 charts is that we don't have to close the dialog box to format something else.

In the previous podcast, we set the minimum and maximum values to be the same on both sides of the chart. This ensures that the numbers are on the same scale. We can easily do the same in Excel 2007 by clicking on the right-hand axis and making the same settings. And the best part is, we don't have to close the dialog box to go back to the chart. We can simply click on another element in the chart and the Format dialog box will automatically adjust. This is a great enhancement in Excel 2007 that makes formatting charts much more efficient. Thanks for watching and we'll see you next time for another netcast from MrExcel.
