Microsoft Excel Tutorial - Trick to allow the fill handle to fill 1, 2, 3 instead of giving you 1, 1, 1.

Welcome to the MrExcel netcast, where we bring you the best tips and tricks for mastering Excel. In this episode, we'll be diving into the Fill Handle feature and all the cool tricks you can do with it. So grab your favorite beverage and get ready to learn some new Excel skills.

We all know how to use the Fill Handle to quickly fill in a series of numbers or dates. But did you know that it can also work with months, days of the week, and even quarters and years? That's right, Excel is smart enough to understand abbreviations and different formats for these series. But there's one tricky scenario that always stumped me - filling in quarters and years together. That is, until I learned the secret of using "1Q" at the beginning of the series. Trust me, it will save you a lot of frustration.

But what about when you need to fill in a series of numbers, and Excel just keeps giving you 1s? Don't worry, there's a simple solution for that too. Just hold down the CTRL key while dragging the Fill Handle, and Excel will automatically count up for you. It's a little-known trick that can save you a lot of time and effort. And if you forget to hold down the CTRL key, don't worry - you can still fix it by holding down the CTRL key while dragging the Fill Handle again.

But the Fill Handle isn't just for numbers and dates. You can also use it to fill in weekdays, months, and even years. Just right-click and drag the Fill Handle, and you'll see options for filling in weekdays, months, or years. And if you need to fill in specific days of the year, like the 15th and last day of each month, we've got a trick for that too. Just select both dates, right-click and drag the Fill Handle, and choose "Fill Months". It's a handy trick that can save you a lot of time when working with payroll or other recurring tasks.
