Fluid volume excess can also be called fluid volume overload, hypervolemia, overhydration, or water intoxication. There are three types of fluid volume overload: hypertonic overload, hypotonic overload, and isotonic overload.

Sign and symptoms of fluid volume overload can include jugular venous distention (JVD), crackles, bounding pulse, hypertension, peripheral edema, ascites, and weight gain.

Nursing interventions revolve around helping remove excess fluid. The nurse should monitor for electrolyte imbalances and that the patient does not experience too much fluid removal (fluid volume deficit).

Treatment include diuretics (loop, osmotics, thiazides) and this depends on the cause of the fluid volume excess, severity, and patient's renal function.
