Prior to withdrawing medication from a vial, it is helpful to inject air, depending on the medication's instructions and your facility's protocols. This prevents a vacuum from forming, which could create resistance as you go to withdraw.

To do this, clean the vial and place it on a flat surface. Pull back on the plunger to fill it with air to match the ordered dose amount.

Next, pierce the vial stopper with the needle and inject the air into the vial’s air space. Keep the needle in the vial as you invert it, and then you should be able to easily withdraw the amount of the ordered medication.
