The DROP and TAKE functions in Excel are useful for extracting or excluding a portion of an array or range of cells. The syntax for both functions is similar, but they work in opposite ways:
=DROP(array, rows, [columns])
=TAKE(array, rows, [columns])
The array argument is the source array or range from which you want to drop or take rows or columns. The rows argument indicates the number of rows to drop or take. A negative number means dropping or taking rows from the end. The columns argument indicates the number of columns to drop or take. A negative number also means dropping or taking columns from the end.
For example, suppose you have a dataset in B2:F11 and you want to use the DROP and TAKE functions to manipulate it. Here are some possible formulas and results:
=DROP(B2:F11, 2) // drop the first 2 rows
=TAKE(B2:F11, 2) // take the first 2 rows
=DROP(B2:F11,, 3) // drop the first 3 columns
=TAKE(B2:F11,, 3) // take the first 3 columns
=DROP(B2:F11, -4) // drop the last 4 rows
=TAKE(B2:F11, -4) // take the last 4 rows
=DROP(B2:F11, -3, -2) // drop the last 3 rows and 2 columns
=TAKE(B2:F11, -3, -2) // take the last 3 rows and 2 columns
