My new book is out! It's called Massage Is Weird: https://massagesloth.com/book/
How do you give a deep tissue massage in a way that works with the body as a whole?
0:00 Introduction
2:00 Working with the sides of the body
4:33 Approaching the body from new angles
5:34 Moving the body as you work
6:57 Working with the parts of the body that tend to get ignored
Something that's disappointing to me as a massage client is leaving a session feeling "flat." This happens when the massage therapist concentrates on the areas of the body that are most easily accessible, and that are the most common areas of complaint. I invite you to think locally (keep those painful areas in mind), but work globally. Work with the areas that are connected, or that seem to commonly be affected along with the region you're focusing on.
For me, that means making sure to contact the hips whenever I'm working with the low back. It means working with the chest, neck, and rotator cuff whenever the upper back is in pain. More than that, it means expanding the scope of my massage to include the nearby fascia.
Finally, if you want your massage to feel truly profound, work with the full body. Make contact with the hips, and feet, and lateral thoracic region. Don't forget the scalp, and make contact with the abdomen when clients are coming in for stress relief. These things can make your massage seem much more three-dimensional, and it can differentiate you in a crowded field.
Let me know what you think, and what you'd like to see next! If you've got a technique or strategy for making the full body feel acknowledged during a massage, leave it in the comments below!
