Professor Jordan Schulman demonstrates the first steps in processing 35mm film. These steps are filmed with the light on for demonstrative purposes, but this process is completed in total darkness to not expose the film. Professor Schulman goes over how to cut the film from the roll, and lead it onto the reel.
Full Process:
Make sure the plastic tanks with the plastic reels are bone dry. (Otherwise the emulsion will start to get wet, and processing will not work).
Make sure the “core” is in the tank.
Make sure your reels have two ball bearings.
Even if you are only processing 1 roll of film, you should have 2 reels in the tank, one will be empty.
Left side back, right side forward unlocks the reel. Lock the reels before beginning the loading process in the dark.
35mm will be completely shut, completely tight. Slides into biggest notch.
Teeth align with corresponding notches. Should click together, so you can lead the film onto the reel.
Turn off lights.
Use the church key to discharge the film from the canister, and use scissors to cut the film from the reel. For a straight cut, I recommend placing the film reel between your first two fingers and then cutting it across cleanly.
Pull the film (the end already in your hand that you cut) onto the reel, and significantly over the ball bearings, moving into the FLAT side, not curved, about an inch past the ball bearings.
Gently guide the film back and forth, just using thumbs to lead the film onto the reel, and to keep the “crazy curl” under control.
Film will be about 3-5 feet long in total.
Stack both reels on top of each other and then seal the lid on top so the container is light-proof.
Turn back on the lights!
