Following the Japanese defeat in the Second world war the Korean peninsula was occupied by the Soviet Union in the North and the United States in the south. Following elections in 1948 the zones we're split into the Communist North and the Pro-Western South. Tension would escalate as both sides desired a unified Korea under their own governments. The North, heavily supplied by the Soviet Union crossed the 38th parallel on June 25th, 1950 starting the Korean War.
