The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in an attempt to uphold its communist regime. What eventuated was a 9 year conflict between Soviet and Afghan troops and the local Mujahideen backed by the United States and a number of Arab states. The war became one of the Soviet Union's longest and would become known as the USSR's Vietnam war, due to the nature of the conflict and the consequences it had on the Soviet Union. Ultimately the Soviet-Afghan war would become regarded as one of the causes of the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.
