The numeric keypad can be very useful in Pro Tools as it can be used to trigger a number play and record functions or to activate a variety of playback speeds in both forward and backwards directions. In the standard version of Pro Tools there are 2 main numeric keypad modes: Transport and Shuttle. In this video I describe the functions of both, along with a third mode only available in Pro Tools HD, Shuttle mode. Depending on the selected mode, the num pad will behave differently and the mode you choose will be governed by the type of project you are working on and your own preferences.

In addition to these main numeric keypad modes, Pro Tools offers an additional mode called Shuttle Lock. This can be activated when in either Classic or Transport modes and allows playback of up to 2 tracks simultaneously at a variety of speeds, controllable by the 1-9 keys on the num pad.
