The Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) has been fined S$20,000 by the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) for breaches under the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) related to two incidents where personal data of 34,760 individuals was compromised.
The first incident involved a phishing attack in October 2022, where CASE's email accounts were accessed, leading to the exposure of 22,542 email addresses.
The second breach in June 2023 likely occurred during a data migration process, affecting the personal data of 12,218 individuals.
The PDPC found that CASE had failed to enforce adequate security measures, including proper password management and vendor oversight.
CASE has since taken steps to rectify these issues, including implementing multi-factor authentication, enhancing password policies, and providing regular data protection training for staff.
