Dr Chee Soon Juan, Secretary-General of the Singapore Democratic Party, addressed concerns about the influx of foreigners into Singapore, highlighting what he describes as an existential threat to the nation.
He referenced historical surveys showing a significant portion of Singaporeans expressing a desire to emigrate, citing the government's failure to foster a sense of loyalty among citizens despite decades of uninterrupted rule.
Dr Chee illustrated the crisis with two graphs: one showing Singapore's declining Total Fertility Rate (TFR) and another depicting the increasing number of foreigners entering the country.
He emphasized that the government has attempted various measures to increase the TFR, such as baby bonuses and tax incentives, but has not addressed the root cause—the high cost of living and stress faced by Singaporeans.
He criticized the government's recent actions, such as raising the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and other costs, which he argues exacerbate the problem.
Dr Chee questioned whether the current government, under Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, can resolve these issues, given that previous leaders have failed to do so.
He called for a reduction in the cost of living and stricter limits on the number of foreigners entering Singapore, warning that without these changes, Singapore's future as a nation is at risk.
He concluded by urging Singaporeans to consider these issues in the upcoming elections and invited them to meet him at a book signing event.
