Not sure about a gear purchase? A great strategy is to buy and sell gear to build your opportunities.
Think of every gear purchase as an investment, just because you have bought a new lens doesn't mean you have lost x amount of money. You have actually acquired an item of value to others. This creates an opportunity to work on different kinds of shoots/jobs and when you find you no longer use the photography or video gear then you can sell it and it usually ends up being a very inexpensive way to own the gear you need at particular times.
Great websites to buy and sell are Ebay, Gumtree and Craigslist, keep in mind to take good care of the gear if you intend to sell it. Be also mindful to inspect the gear where local pickup is an option or if buying on ebay, check their seller rating and item details closely. As of course there are some risks with buying second hand but for the most part I have had great success with this strategy to build opportunities for my video business.
