Loud noises and aging are widely known to cause hearing loss. However, some life-saving medications also harm our hearing as a side effect because they kill the specialized cells that convert sound waves into electrical signals the brain can interpret. Nicole Folan, a postbaccalaureate research fellow in the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Health, is searching for ways to help those cells survive in order to preserve patients’ hearing.
