Our topic in this video is a man whose talons still grip hard on the body politik today. The regime he helped build, and which he served to its final hours, is thankfully long vanquished, but the legacy of his talents he bequeathed continues to grow and evolve. Joseph Goebbels is still ‘spinning’ in his grave through his disciples in public relations, communications and information management. What would he have found not to like in our digital world.

YouTube has a huge range of Goebbels-related material. The documentary The Goebbels Experiment is a must-see    • Video   (though why it is censored I struggle to understand). A good background on his diaries can be found on Holocaust Documents channel    • The Goebbels Diaries  , and a contemporary documentary on Propaganda is instructive    • Video  .

Further reading on Goebbels lingering influence can be found in this piece from The Atlantic https://www.theatlantic.com/internati... , this piece from Haaretz https://www.haaretz.com/world-news/.p... and this piece from The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/media/201....

And do watch this appropriate clip from Aldous Huxley    • Aldous Huxley on Technodictators

It will be uncomfortable for many viewers, and was for the host, to single out the fate of the Goebbels children for special attention over those countless other children who suffered wantonly and cruelly under the rampaging and rapacious armies of Pere Goebbels and his like in the dark 20th Century. However, I do feel we lose our humanity somewhat not to feel some stirring of feeling for these children murdered by their Mother and Father in the last destructive act of one of the great tragedies of the human story. They were no less children for all their privilege, for all their play-times with some of the great monsters of history. A YouTuber called Frida has a channel    • Video   where she has made videos on the Goebbels family. Her website https://hchildren.webs.com/ and https://hchildren2.webs.com/ has biographies of the individual children and excerpts from their father’s diaries that relate to his family time. The quotes from the last bunker days are harrowing. I don’t know Frida, the motivation behind her work, or her political sympathies, but her research helps illuminate a small but important aspect of the life and work of a man who had such a profound and lasting impact on humanity.

ReadingforWisdom is a YouTube channel aimed at exploring some of the ideas around the idea of books as a timeless technology, essential for our intellectual evolution as a species. Considering ‘books’ can and will take us in all sorts of intellectual journeys but the channel does have a natural bias towards discussions about books, their ideas and authors who focus on history, warfare, politics, culture, science and the human condition (ok, most things that matter then).

The videos will explore the history of religion but, unlike much content on the web referring to ‘wisdom’, it is a thoroughly secular enterprise, the editor a lifelong religious sceptic. The channel is a companion to https://readingforwisdom.com, a site curated by Dr Emmet McElhatton to modestly add to what Robert Maynard Hutchings, Chicago academic, Editor-in-Chief of the Great Books of the Western World series and, with colleague Mortimer Adler, founder of the Great Books movement, described as the ‘great conversation’ of history; the dialogue created through the exchange of ideas through the medium of published writings.

While the material on https://readingforwisdom.com is grounded in rigorous study, the product of lifelong reading, we hope to provide, and recommend, material that is accessible, stimulating and free from unnecessary academic stylings.

This series of videos are filmed and edited by Caleb McClure. Music is supplied by https://www.bensound.com/
