In 1997, Tyler Reynolds had his first cardiac surgery at NYU Langone at just 9 days old. Now 25 years later, he had a second lifesaving procedure. Reynolds was born with complex congenital heart disease with an unusual coronary variant that was corrected but deteriorated as he grew. Reynolds led an active childhood playing sports but once he became a college athlete, he developed severe chest pain and shortness of breath after extreme physical exertion.

Reynolds was referred to Dan G. Halpern, MD, medical director for NYU Langone's Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program, who conducted comprehensive cardiac testing and discovered severely clogged arteries. To ensure Reynolds would maintain his active lifestyle, congenital cardiothoracic surgeons Ralph S. Mosca, MD and T.K. Susheel Kumar, MD used an innovative approach to restore healthy blood flow to his heart. Reynolds was literally up and running two days after his coronary arterioplasty and continues his strong recovery.
