Was Gamescom worth it? Is Gamescom good?

Having been to two Gamescom events so far I thought I’d chip in with whether or not Gamescom is actually worth attending.

There’s a long answer and a short answer. Short answer yes, long answer - it depends!

Gamescom is held in Cologne Germany every year in August. Cologne is a great little city, there’s some fantastic German food, nice little cafes and restaurants and it’s the home of a number of gaming companies (EA and Ubisoft studios Blue Byte).

It’s situated on the Rhine, and is very accessible - most fly into Frankfurt and train from there, I live in Amsterdam so it was just a three hour train to the largest gaming event in Europe.
Here are some of the biggest selling points of attending Gamescom:
Being around like minded people. So many cosplays, gamers, industry folks and just genuinely good people. If you want to speak nerd, it’s fluent here.
Playing games early. In 2019 I got to play Doom Eternal, Borderlands 3, Luigi’s Mansion, and a few other titles not being released until next year. The lines are insane but if you can hack it, you’ll get your mits on some pre released games.
Cologne is a pretty neat place. Food can be great, the airbnbs can be quite cute and if booked ahead of time, very affordable.
Networking - if you’re wanting to crack into the gaming industry, this is the place to do it. There are so many people who work in the industry, PR, journalists, developers and indie studio reps it’s easy to get connected.
It’s well run - there were no administrative issues and everything ran super smoothly.
Merch - there is some incredibly cool merchandise at Gamescom, often for somewhat substantial discounts.
Cosplays - if you’re a photographer like me, or you want to show off your skills Gamescom is the place to be.

Caveats:- You’re paying 300-500 euros to play games you’ll be playing in the next 6-12 months. If you’re patient and frugal, this isn’t enough of a reason to go.
The lines are absurd. Some people were waiting 6 hours just to get a 15-20 minute demo of Doom eternal. I managed to get in on an hour and a half line, Doom’s great but considering I’d be close to finishing the campaign in 6 hours... I’ll pass on that line.
A lot of demo’s are in German. Pokemon Sword and Shield for instance was all in German with no option to change the language. Considering this is a German event, it’s totally fine but as an international this is something to consider. Last year I sat through a 20 minute demo of battlefield 5 that was all in German.
Farts. So. Many. Fart clouds.
