How to be a good animal rights activist/advocate
What is animal rights?
Animals can be exploited in numerous ways. Animal rights is the idea in which animals are entitled to the possession of their own existence and that their most basic interests—such as the need to avoid suffering—should be afforded the same consideration as human beings. So how can you be the best animal rights activist? Is there a right or wrong way?
I adopted a vegan lifestyle after being introduced to earthlings and forks over knives, and although I was back and forth with my diet, I eventually became fully vegan about 5 years ago. I also became an animal rights activist. This is valuable in regard to my learning process and how to communicate and teach people about animal rights etc. I found a lot of the activism very difficult and emotionally I knew there was something missing, or rather something more I could do. I believe activism is powerful and is completely relevant in educating people about animal exploitation, but I also believe there are other ways to connect and breakthrough that conditioning.
Some animal rights activists specialize in a particular form of animal exploitation. For instance, they might target factory farms to dissuade farmers from raising animals for meat, eggs, and milk in inhumane situations, or they may focus on protesting horse racing etc. There are so many areas of animal cruelty, and as an activist, it’s difficult to focus on everything. Finding an area that you feel strongest about, or lean more towards can sometimes be even more powerful than spreading yourself too thin.
How to be the best!
Educate Yourself
There are so many issues related to animal welfare, from factory farming and animal testing to the use of animals in entertainment and the broad-spectrum of abuse that pets suffer.
Getting people to listen is crucial but you must be as factual as possible. Memorizing climate impact statistics etc and reading up on factory farming processes is good. I would say research is by far the greatest aid you will have as an activist. Not just for your outreach work, but for your self. The more you know about how animals are treated around the world, the greater an impact you can have on how those animals are treated moving forward. So read up on the issues you’re passionate about and keep up to date with new developments. Learning about some of the horrific things that happen to animals is often difficult. But rather than becoming depressed, try to channel your energy into action!
Once you have made a start educating yourself you can educate your family and friends - the people closest to you. Change one mind at a time.
Get Involved With an Animal Rights Organization
Our individual actions can be hugely powerful, but when we act together, we can achieve so much. Meeting other people who share our ideals and goals can also help us stay motivated and focused. Look for local groups or meet-ups to find other compassionate people near where you live. If you want to get even more involved, donate your time as well as yourmoney if possible. Ask your local animal rights organization what they need and how you can help. Every nonprofit needs help with something, and you don’t always have to be physically present. Use your strengths or trade to help organizations in need.
