Veteran Filipino journalist Maria Ressa has won the Nobel Peace Prize alongside Russian counterpart Dmitry Muratov for their work in safeguarding freedom of expression in their respective countries.
The Nobel committee says Mr Muratov has been credited with defending free speech under increasingly challenging conditions in Russia, while Ms Ressa co-founded Rappler.com, and has been commended for exposing abuse of power and growing authoritarianism in the Philippines.
Europe Correspondent Nick Dole says the win came as a surprise.
