Heart and circulatory diseases cause a quarter of all deaths in the UK, that’s more than 160,000 deaths each year, equating to an average of 460 deaths each day or one every three minutes in the UK. Are lifestyle risk factors to blame, or can we reduce the risk by taking regular exercise or changing our diet? To find out the facts, we speak to some leading cardiologists at OneWelbeck, in the heart of Central London.
Consultant Cardiologist’s Dr Boon Lim and Dr Iqbal Malik offer some useful tips on how to assess your own cardiac health at home. They state that in order to keep your heart healthy, having a good diet and exercise regularly are the cornerstones of looking after your heart health.
Starting with diet, having two litres of water is recommended, and to cut back on calories if you’re consuming more than you need. Increasing exercise levels can also have a positive impact on cardiac health as it’s recommended to get your heart rate up three times a week. By the time you get to 40 years old, Dr Malik states that if you have no cardiac related symptoms, having a blood test at your GP to ensure your cholesterol isn’t too high and that your sugars levels are normal, is also beneficial.
On the other hand, sports cardiology specialist Dr Amanda Varnava explains that occasionally sports and exercise can actually expose underlying cardiac conditions, from athletes' hearts to sudden cardiac death. ECGs and their findings can be changed by their sport participation, and individuals who do lots of sport and exercise might unfortunately be harbouring an underlying heart condition that could actually put them at risk. Seeking cardiac advice by a processional when at this level is recommended.
