In recent times, there has been a lot of chatter about large language models like chatGPT, Google's competitor Bard, and more recently GTP-4, and their implications for the future of work. As a software engineer myself, I've been asked whether chatGPT or other advanced AI models will eventually replace developers, and whether it's still worth studying computer science.
ChatGPT is a large language AI model from OpenAI. It can seemingly respond to any given prompt with astounding realism, although not always factually correct. You can even ask chatGPT to write a 4 paragraph essay about the French Revolution or write code based on your own parameters. In a recent video, I even integrated chatGPT-generated dialogue into my indie game.
ChatGPT quickly became a sensation, attracting about 1 million users in just a week after its launch, and it's expected to pass 1 billion users by the end of 2023. However, many are worried that models like chatGPT and GTP-4 will start to replace many white-collar workers, including software engineers and developers.
So, will chatGPT replace developers? The short answer is no. Instead, these tools will augment developers' abilities and potentially reduce the need for as many software engineers. We're not yet at the point where all software engineers can be replaced by someone typing in prompts to chatGPT.
As Andrej Karpathy, one of the key engineers who worked on Tesla's Autopilot, noted, Github Copilot is currently writing about 80% of the code he is developing. This is likely to transition the responsibilities and create new roles. Automation often leads to some roles being replaced, but new roles are also defined in relation to that automation. For example, the rise of big data led to the explosion of data science and data engineer roles.
Similarly, software engineers might transition to more of a software architect type role, where they focus less on the how and more on the what. Tools like chatGPT, Github Copilot, and other models could handle the actual writing of basic code, while the software architects define the problem that needs to be solved. Machines have written their own code before, and auto-generated code can be seen everywhere, particularly in website builder sites.
However, there are different levels of complexity when it comes to development. While a large language model can probably write internal web apps or APIs that are somewhat routine, cutting-edge research or algorithm development will still be left to human software engineers.
In the case of game development, a sufficiently complex large language model like chatGPT could reduce the number of game developers needed. However, designing a compelling and fun game requires creativity and subjectivity that chatGPT might struggle with. For implementation, like adding physics or procedural generation, chatGPT would be fairly capable, especially as it develops.
