Course Curriculum:

• Icy Branch Structure

We start in Houdini by creating the icy branch setup. This effect is achieved through layering multiple pop simulations. By creating leading points that generate the branches we’ll be able to easily art direct this effect. We’re going to set up this simulation in a way that ensures this will work on any geometry.

• Atmospherics

We’ll set up a simple fog volume that will act as our wind, and also falling snow particles using pops. We’ll also create a simple growth attribute that will help out with setting up the render layers.

• Solaris

We’re going to use Solaris to assemble the shot. We start by creating a snow material for our ground from scratch, using material X. We’ll also create a custom material for the frosted version of the helmet. Here we’re going to use various attributes from the sop context to help
with shading. Finally we set up all the atmospheric effects, and separate each render into a specific layer. Each layer will have different AOVs depending
on what we need.

• Nuke Compositing
In nuke we bring everything together. We’re going to split the AOVs that we need and rebuild the beauty passes. We will use custom passes that we set up in Solaris, to help us control the transition between the regular helmet and the frosted version. Then we can layer the icy growth on top, add glows and flares, and complete the project.

• Downloads
You will have all the geometry required included with the downloads.

The download archive also include the completed Houdini project file (ver. 20.0.590) and Nuke project (ver. 15)
