How To ACTUALLY Optimize Premiere Pro
One of the most common problems editors face is Premiere Pro being slow. So in this video I'll show you 3 ways to make it faster.
One of the ways you can speed up premiere is to disable video effects. i often apply lumetri color at the beginning of my edit so I use this trick all the time. In your program monitor window you can see the fx button. if you click on it, it will disable all video effects on all layers and clips. This is a great way to speed up your playback withing one click.
Another way is to use proxies. Proxies are great if you need to scrub trough your footage really quickly or you recorded the footage in a very resource intensive format. You'll need to encode your videos as a lower quality placeholder and premiere will switch to these when you start editing. It sounds like a lot of work but premiere automates like 90% of the stuff so the only thing you'll need to do is to let it render for like five minutes.
I've done a lot of testing on this and H.265 (HEVC) codec wins every time against H.264. Simply put it's more optimized and not as resource intensive. And while editing H.265 footage can be challanging because the compression is very high, enxoding it doesn't seem to have the same problem. And I was able to render out my videos almost 40% faster by using this codec. So if you're looking for fast exports or plan to upload your videos to the web, there should be no compatibility issues and it's a win-win situation.
