The 2012 Kia Rio was a subcompact hatchback comparable in size to the third-generation VW Golf, but 10-cm longer wheelbase make it more spacious. In the U.S., it came with a 1.6-liter direct-injection engine and a choice of either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. In this hands-on review I discuss the car, take it on a test drive, read through the list of repairs and recalls, and lament the decline of the small car segment in the U.S.
