The last handheld VHS camcorder: a triumphant bang or a dispirited whimper?
Which VHS camcorder was the last one, and who made it? It appears that JVC manufactured and sold the last handheld VHS camcorders throughout 2005 and 2006: GR-AXM17 (VHS-C), GR-SXM37 (SVHS-C), GR-AXM18 (VHS-C) and GR-SXM38 (SVHS-C).
The above four camcorders have the same body and features. The major differences are 20x lens and standard VHS recording mode for AXM, and 25x lens and VHS/SVHS/SVHS-ET recording modes for SXM. Also, the 2006 models have a blue decorative collar instead of a silver one. All of these camcorders use a ⅙ - inch CCD sensor with 320 thousand pixels, have black-and-white viewfinder and color 2.5-inch flip-out LCD monitor. Audio is recorded as linear single channel. Video is output via composite or S-Video connector.
Knowing that the imminent death of analog video is around the corner, JVC could spice up its last VHS camcorder, incorporating Hi-Fi audio, progressive-scan recording, true widescreen, maybe even adding a high-speed USB or Firewire port with built-in analog-to-digital converter, ending the format with a triumphant bang. Instead the last VHS camcorder was rather pedestrian, recording single-channel linear audio, having no input for an external microphone, no headphone output, no shoe, and no elaborate manual controls.
