In the post-apocalyptic world of the future, the “numbers” imprinted on each person's body are in charge. This “number” is unique to the individual and signifies the amount of something in your life. It could be the distance you have traveled, or the number of compliments you receive, or anything else. “The number” can change, become larger or smaller, and the person can affect this. However, if the “number” reaches zero, the person will be sucked into the abyss.
This is exactly what happened to the protagonist's mother. Being half sucked into the abyss, her mother assigned Hina to find a certain Red Baron, a legendary hero of the past.
