UTIs or urinary tract infections are common in children. In the case of infants and young children, the only presenting sign of a UTI may be fever.
If your child has a fever without any other associated symptoms (such as cough, nasal congestion, sore throat, diarrhea, vomiting, or rash), then it would be a good idea to have their urine tested for a UTI.
UTI are more common in girls, however, boys may also get an infection.
Nonspecific signs of UTIs in babies include fever, as well as irritability and poor feeding. In older children and adolescents, common symptoms of UTI include pain and/or burning with urination, frequent urination, bloody urine, pressure or cramping in the lower abdomen, and fever.
UTIs must be treated with an antibiotics. Therefore, if you suspect your child may have a UTI, please contact their pediatrician or visit an urgent care center right way as it is important for them to receive prompt medical care.
