The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous region, a Territory in northwestern China, has long been one of the major crossroads between Eastern and Western Eurasia. The silk road, located in the heart of Xinjiang, documents the intensity of these ties at least since the Han dynasty (206 BC - 220 ad). Known examples are the finds in this region of Tocharian Buddhist manuscripts and older, well-preserved Tarim mummies, some of which were similar to Europeans. Even in ancient Chinese Chronicles there were mentions of blue-eyed blondes who in ancient times lived in the deserts of Central Asia.
The Tocharian languages are known from manuscripts from 500 to 800 ad found South of the Tien Shan, in the Northern, Central and Eastern parts of the Tarim basin. The connection between these languages is usually explained by the divergence from a common ancestor, proto-Tocharian, which must have preceded them by more than a Millennium, probably since the middle of the I Millennium BC.Initially, the Tochars did not have their own writing system until the I–II centuries ad, when it was borrowed from the Indians. First, they used the kharoshthi letter and only to In C. uh, switched to brahmi writing, which they adapted to their phonetics.
