Celts of Southern Germany, origin and family ties
The European Iron Age north of the Alps is characterised by two key archaeological cultures – the Hallstatt (c. 800–450 BCE) and La Tène (after 450 BCE and until the Roman period around 50 BCE), which have been described to varying degrees as ‘Celtic’. #Celts are first mentioned in Greek sources in the late 6th century BCE, and the name is widely used in classical sources to refer to societies associated with the La Tène culture. Beyond this historical evidence and its association with the Hallstatt and La Tène cultures, there is also linguistic evidence for the existence of Celtic languages across much of Europe. But in this study, the researchers provide genome-wide data from individuals from an early Celtic society in south-west Germany, revealing its genetic makeup and political organisation in the 6th and 5th centuries BCE. Isotopic data were also obtained to reconstruct patterns of individual migrations.
