Drums are the foundation of many songs, especially in Pop, Rock and Country. As a result they need to sound stellar... fat, punchy, and have lots of impact.
The most important aspect of achieving a great drum sound is your Overhead and Room tracks. In most mixes, these account for probably 70-80% of the overall drum sound. The close mics are then there to supplement this and add any extra character needed.
