Ornithologist Stephen Kress first encountered puffins, more than 50 years ago and is said to be the most influential seabird conservationist in the world.
Puffins nest in colonies to provide protection from predators. He had a theory that the young puffins remembered the island but weren’t confident to come ashore. To help the birds feel safe he placed wooden decoys of puffins around the island. In 1977, just days after they were installed, the first puffin returned to the island. Four years later they started breeding. The success continued and there are nearly 200 breeding pairs nested on Eastern Egg Rock. This method is named the ‘social attraction’ and is used globally with massive successes. Scientists use decoys, mirrors, scent, audio recordings, fake eggs, and artificial burrows to simulate the presence of other members of the species. Project Puffin have stated that, at least 42 seabird species in 14 countries have benefited from techniques developed by Kress and his team.
His Project Puffin is evidence of just how much of an impact we can have on wildlife and nature in general. When used correctly and compassionately our intelligence and skills can creatively and positively make a huge difference.
