With the release of Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Erdtree I thought it was a good time for a video essay about what makes a good soulslike game. I give examples from Dark Souls, Elden Ring, Lies of P, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Lords of the Fallen. Why can’t we stop playing games from the souls genre? I also include a few quotes from President of From Software, Hidetaka Miyazaki. Here are the mechanics that I believe create a fun souls-like experience:
-Combat that is both punishing and satisfying.
-Stamina management.
-Death as a learning tool.
-Secrets, hidden areas of a game that you could easily miss if you’re not being observant.
-Player Freedom.
-Unique Boss designs that make you approach them in a new way.
-Developers mess with the player (A little bit).
-Smart level design with looping shortcuts.
-Atmosphere that tells the story of the world.
