Is Breath of the Wild better than Tears of the Kingdom? That's the question I want to dive into in this Zelda video essay. BOTW had a more peaceful and serene atmosphere. The environment felt so calm and made the player feel immersed in nature. On the other hand TOTK encourages players to create chaos and destruction with vehicles and other Zonai device creations. Breath of the Wild's world is heavily influenced by the Sheikah Tribe and their technology. Divine Beasts, Shrines, and even armor and weapons are designed after the style of the Sheikah. These are all absent in Tears of the Kingdom with the biggest exclusion of all being the iconic guardian enemy. They were a really fun challenge in BOTW and gave players a reason to learn how to parry so that they could reflect the guardian's lasers back at them.
Breath of the Wild also offered some great abilities like cryonis that let you freeze blocks of ice on the waters surface. It made traversing lakes and oceans a breeze and opened up some fun puzzle opportunities. Remote Bombs were great for fishing and knocking enemies far away from Link. Because you could choose when to detonate them you could place them strategically for traps. Stasis allows you to freeze an object in time and by hitting it repeatedly you can build up momentum to launch it long distances. This can be used as a surprise attack on far away monsters or Link can grab ahold of the object to soar through the sky. Revali's Gale is the most beloved champion's ability in Breath of the Wild. It creates a huge gust of wind that sends Link upward with his paraglider. It's a great movement option to get to the top of a mountain quickly. I miss magnesis least of all since Ultra Hand is just a better version of it.
The thing I miss most from Breath of the Wild are the crazy and fun glitches. The infinite active hitbox glitch is much like the infinite sword glitch in Ocarina of Time. It allows Link's weapons to hit constantly, not just when he swings them. This can be activated on horse back and has really cool effects with elemental weapons. Skew bounce involves Link storing a certain shield surfing skew and then starting a shield surf but unequipping the shield before hitting the ground. This gives him an extra high jump to get up on something tall quickly or to activate bullet time from flat ground during a battle. Shield block reset and thunder clap rush are great glitches for combat. They allow Link to zoom across the battlefield and force a flurry rush on an enemy even without dodging one of their attacks. Wind Bombs involve Link jumping forward and entering bullet time and then placing both the circular and square bomb behind himself. When the first bomb is detonated it sends the second one into Link sending him flying across the map. But the best glitch of all in Breath of the Wild is Bullet Time Bounce. This glitch is performed by freezing an enemy and then having Link shield surf onto its back and entering bullet time shortly before making contact. This makes Link bounce and launch so fast that the game can't even keep up with him and load in the open world. This can be used for clipping into objects or the ground but what I like to use it for is skipping link across the ground like a rock.
Overall I enjoy Tears of the Kingdom a lot because of the unprecedented amount of creativity and freedom it allows with its incredible building system. But I hope that if you learn anything from my video it's that there are many reasons to return to and enjoy Breath of the Wild.
